Broken

In this piece, I explore the emotional pain that the children of prisoners have experienced. From a seminar presentation from the Seum corporation I learned that before the corporation's organization for children of prisoners, the children were part of a small minority group that was not highly supported or known. Additionally, these children experienced discrimination and bullying from their peers. Thus, I wanted to express their pain with emotion. Through the use of emotion, I intend to conjure empathy from the audience. The piece features a glass bird that has been fractured. Glass was used to implicate the fragility and sensitivity of young children. A bird was used to communicate childhood innocence and dreams. The fracture placed at the center of the bird is reflective of emotional traumas from social injustice that the children of prisoners may have experienced. Despite how the background is completely fractured and falling apart, the bird is not entirely fractured to show that with communal love and care these children can be helped and healed.
