Umbilical Cord

Most children of incarcerated parents in South Korea struggle to become a part of society due to the lack of governmental and juridical support. The social stigma towards children of incarcerated parents also prevented them from integrating into society. I was devastated to learn this, as I couldn't understand why the child had to be blamed for their parents' crimes and judged through biased eyes. Probably caused due to inadequate social beliefs, I wanted to address the challenges they faced to empower them.

Hence, I have produced photographs that ironically depict the children's situations. The left leg represents the child, while the right leg represents the parent; both connected by a strap express how they are indefinitely connected and that their wrong-doings are passed on to the child. Yet, the black pants and hunched posture with the hood covering the model's face represent how they feel isolated and fear facing society due to improper social stigmas.
